An exhibition about how home is carried, transformed, and reconstructed through migration.
LAR – Home ist nicht nur ein Ort brings together painting, collage, embroidery, photography, assemblage, and participatory installation by Brazilian artists Elisa Carreno and Vanessa Neuber. Rooted in their experiences as Brazilian women living in Berlin, the exhibition asks when a place of residence becomes home.
The Portuguese word lar refers to home, but reaches beyond the physical structure of a house. Here, home is understood as something continuously assembled through memory, bodily gestures, relationships, domestic objects, food, friendship, language, and everyday rituals. Rather than presenting displacement only as rupture or loss, the exhibition considers how familiarity, protection, and belonging are created in new surroundings.
From migration to material experience
The exhibition opens with Migration Patchwork, an installation connecting the artists’ trajectories through fragments associated with migration. Other works return to the cocoon and the childhood gesture of building a cabana as images of temporary shelter and transformation; consider friendship, vulnerability, and care between women; and explore touch, resilience, food, celebration, and hospitality as forms of emotional connection.
Across the exhibition, fabric, paper, images, colour, found objects, and handmade forms carry traces of places, relationships, and experiences that cannot always be expressed through language. Visitors are invited not only to observe, but also to inhabit, touch, remember, and respond.
